 Lady Show report

In the scope of the celebration of the International Women’s Day celebrated on March 8 each year, the English Club Université de Lomé organized its firth edition of ‘Lady Show’ with the help of the responsible of public affairs of the US embassy, Brenda Soya. Through this activity the club celebrated female and give them the opportunity show what they are capable of. This celebration was organized on Saturday 9th March at Restaurant Chaine Est. The activities started at 9h 00. Great personalities like the associate Dean of FLESH (Faculty of Art and Humanities) at Université de Lomé, Brenda Soya, the responsible of public affairs at US embassy, Ms.Ameyo Awuku, lecturer in the department of English at Université de Lomé, lecturers, representatives of some associations like GF2D, SEED-TOGO, American Corner Fan Club and many guesses were present.

After the welcoming address of the responsible of female and external affairs of the English Club, it was the turn of the second vice Dean to have his say before departing. He exhorted the students that are registered in English department to be member of the club because according to him this can help them to improve and reinforce their speaking skills and show their ‘know how’. He advised also the members to advertise the club so that during the next edition we fill in all the rooms in the restaurant. After the vice Dean, Soya took the floor and talked about the ideas of innovation that women have. She then urged them to continue working on innovation and creativity which can easily lead to their emancipation. Those introductory activities gave a way to the conference chaired by Ms. Awuku around the theme ‘Genda Agenda Gaining Momentum’. She observed that in our societies a role is assign to female but with time this has evolved since minds has been changing with regard to the role of women in the society. It is worth mentioning that she pointed out that women should make effort to be emancipated but this should not bring problems in the society. More it is not a competition or a fight between men and women. The English Club organized also three contests: speech for defense, poem and story writing. In these three contests only ladies competed: fivefor speech competition, four for poetry competition and one for story writing. Three prices were given to the contestants for each competition. I have to mention that the participants who did not gain prices were given books in order to encourage them for trying. The prices consisted of sculptures, bags, books, CDs and date books were offered by the US embassy, the English Club, SEED-TOGO, GF2D, and d’AlmeidaYaovi a book seller at the department of English. Various group like sketch group, dance group, poetry group and the ENS (English News Services) had their performances.

The celebration ended at 1 p.m. with the refreshment offered by the ladies of the club. This is an opportunity for the board to thank all those in one way or in the other helped for the success of this activity.
